"Action packed. A carefully woven, intricate plot. A love story of sorts. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND is a dark and dangerous book, one that balances good and evil, life and death, love and hate, and leaves the reader to do the judging as to validity of any and all of the concepts. However, if you are looking for a sweet romance and a happy-ever-after ending, this is not the book for you. This book plumbs the depths of human depravity, follows the dark paths of revenge and power, drugs and sex. It is not a pleasant book, nor does it paint a pretty picture, but it is a book I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end....The characters are varied, some are just walk-ons, some are well rounded and believable, but they are all there for a purpose. The setting was less well depicted, but that doesn't seem to lessen the impact of IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND. Charlotte Boyett-Compo is an accomplished author and one who will go far in the literary world."

Writer s Club Romance Group

IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND by Charlotte Boyett-Compo is one of the best psychological thrillers I have read.

Luis Quinterra waits 20 years to take his revenge on five men he knew as students at a military academy. In Luis's dark and sadistic mind, the main target is Conor Nolan, who is now a detective for the New Gregory, Iowa police department.

If Conor Nolan had known the events he would set in motion the night he entered the Witch's Brew bar, he would never have met his buddies from the precinct there. He would have told Rhianna Marek, also a detective, that he loved her and would have taken her home without having even one drink. When he bumped into the blonde who said her name was Felicity Rogers and then called him a Celtic warrior, he would have run from the bar.

But Conor didn't do any of these things, and so his nightmare into hell begins. Two days later he is kidnapped. Five months later, he is returned, his body full of heroin. While the doctors are trying to detox him, Rhianna and the other detectives are trying to find out who had taken him and where. They cannot find Felicity Rogers, but they discover that four other men have gone through the same treatment. When Rhianna and the others uncover who is doing all of this, everyone knows that the nightmare is not over.

Rating: 4 Stars

A gripping and well crafted suspense novel from one of the finest authors in the electronic publishing field--Charlotte Boyett-Compo

This novel opens with one h*** of a scene, the torture of DEA agent by an unnamed Colombian and his cohorts. From this beginning we are dropped in the lives of police officers Connor Nolan and Rhianna Marek and the rest of their law enforcement friends who are having a get together at a local bar. Connor meets a gorgeous woman who propositions him, and when he politely refuses she follows him home. But the only one who knows that this woman is real trouble is the bar's waitress, and, unfortunately, her message to Connor is garbled by his answering machine. Dangerous as police work can be, none of them are prepared for what awaits Connor, Rhianna, and Connor's old friends, or the unforeseen outcome of some very hair-raising and unpredictable events sparked with the arrival of the beautiful stranger. Without giving away the plot, there is little more I can say except that this is one of the finest suspense novels I've read in quite a while, with a tightly woven and somewhat involved plot. In the Teeth of the Wind receives my highest commendation. But be warned, it has a bittersweet conclusion that may leave some readers in tears.

Word Weaving

Awesome and impressive are just two of the words that come to mind with this book. Definitely a must read. The writer has done an excellent job of bringing the reader into this book and making them forget everything except turning the next page. You hold your breath, bite your lip, and sit on the edge of your seat in anticipation.

The Police Department in New Gregory, Iowa, is rocked by events that happen in their own tight community. One of their own has disappeared without a trace. Was he kidnapped? Murdered? Or did he simply walk away as some are saying? As they search for answers, they uncover more mysteries that are somehow connected and the race is on to find the solution. The conclusion is a total surprise and definitely not anticipated. A very good twist from the norm. Definitely one of the best books that I have ever read.

Romance Foretold

A mysterious, gorgeous woman shows up at the local hangout of Detective Conor Nolan and his colleagues where she begins a dance of seduction that will change Conor s life forever. Shortly after this dance has started, four masked men drug Conor and drive him to a deserted silo out in the back forty of Iowa. Once there he is tied up and tortured, forced to become addicted to heroine. His partners in the department exhaust every resource in trying to find him, but to no avail. Detective Rhianna Marek searched the hardest, and it broke her heart when five months passed and he wasn t found. Having just realized their feelings for one another, she refused to give up on Conor, and knew he would survive no matter what it took. The biggest problem they faced was that the only real lead they had was the mystery woman from the bar, Felicity Rogers. However, on investigating, they would find that for all intents and purposes, she never existed.

Only when the FBI sends in Agent Franc Bouchard to help in the investigation is any headway mad. Upon searching Conor s past they finally find a connection. Sent to a military academy as an out of control teenager by his father, he became a student who made excellent grades and was a star athlete. While there he became fast friends with four other boys with whom he shared the same background. All five of them had fathers who were cops - something they themselves would become once grown and all had been sent to the academy as a means to learn discipline. When one of these men contact Agent Bouchard and Rhianna, he tells them a story that will give them pieces to the puzzle and send them on a mission to find the other friends. One by one, the men tell the exact same story of being kidnapped and tied to a cot where they were tortured, given heroine, and forced to become addicts, only to be returned to their homes, weeks later. But Conor s abduction has lasted far longer than the others, and by piecing together the men s stories, they find the one biggest thing they all had in common a common enemy who hated them enough to take revenge these twenty years later. This enemy has a reunion planned for the five men that they won t forget should they survive it. Question is, will they?

Charlotte Boyett-Compo has somehow managed to surpass herself on In the Teeth of the Wind . An unforgettable tale of intrigue, suspense, and revenge, you ll want to read it beginning to end in one sitting. (I know I did.) It s also a very moving story about love and friendships that go beyond the norm, and the sacrifices we would make for them. A definite must read!!

Bastulli Mystery Site

Excellent writing, tension and sensory detail make the e-book thriller IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND a fast-paced read. The book is a contemporary novel told in multiple points of view, and I had no problem with the transitions from one viewpoint to another. The writer captures the male viewpoint and cop mentality with absolute believability.

Scribe's World

4 1/2 Stars

"In the Teeth of the Wind" by Charlotte Boyett-Compo is a well-written, compelling suspense story that pulls the reader from page to page effortlessly. This is also the tragic love-story of Rhianna and Conar. The book is dark and evil pervades. In fact the evil is so strong it takes over the story and leaves the reader with little hope. Most of the characters are painted black or in shades of gray and there is little to lighten the darkness of evil. The characters are well-drawn and play their roles to the hilt without being melodramatic. While not a comfortable read, "In the Teeth of the Wind" was an enjoyable journey.

Conor Nolan is a tough, handsome detective with a past. Rhianna Marek is the beautiful fellow officer who loves him. When Conor mysteriously disappears, Rhianna leads Conor's skeptical friends and colleagues on a stubborn search to discover the truth.Conor has been force-fed a steady heroin diet by his captors until he is strangely released, broken and addicted, but alive. His addiction is only the opening gambit in a sinister plot that endangers not just Conor but his oldest friends and Rhianna.

The hero is a perfect hero, including the hint of murky past. The friends are all loyal, devoted and not quite as good as Conor. The heroine is beautiful, sexy, determined.

Equal parts romance and action/suspense, "In the Teeth of The Wind" will keep you guessing.....Boyett-Compo's description of Conor's enslavement puts the reader in the room. The plot is full of twists. The pacing continually increases to heart-pounding conclusion. Enjoy this inventive tale by this veteran writer.

The questions that need answering are who is doing this? Why are they doing it, and what do they have planned next? All of these questions will have you on the edge of your seat until you find the answers. The last question is how will this story turn out? The answer to that is not quite what you will expect.

I must say I have not yet read a book by Charlotte Boyett-Compo that I didn't like, and this one is no exception. At the risk of sounding redundant this book is great.

Millennium Science Fiction and Fantasy

4 Stars

In The Teeth of the Wind is a griping, occasionally horrifying, tale of revenge. I was immediately caught and held by the male protagonist Conor Nolan and his seemingly bizarre captivity. I like a story where I can't predict the next action and Charlotte Boyette-Compo added enough twists to the plot to make a snake dizzy. The heroine Rhianna's independent spirit and love for the hero add depth and sympathy to the story, while the well-rounded villainous characters keep flourishing in spite of all efforts to thwart them.

The action moved from city to city to the ultimate outcome in a country barn, all the while with enough background to keep the reader interested but not overwhelmed. With a cast of characters long enough to be confusing at times, I was pleased when the author wove them into the various subplots and pulled it all together at the end. I found myself really caring what happened next, hating the evil perpetrators and hoping that good would prevail. Be prepared for an unexpected ending. Well worth spending a long evening reading.

The Ultimate Hallucination

In his autobiography On Writing, Stephen King informs us that the ultimate goal of the writer is to provide the reader with a good, entertaining story. Charlotte Boyett-Compo accomplishes this with In the Teeth of the Wind. A plot to which almost everybody can relate: the antagonist carries a childhood grudge to fruition, as promised, twenty years after the fact. We all have memories of schoolyard bullies, real or perceived, and each had our own fantasy of revenge, most of which we never dreamed of carrying out. In presenting this tale of revenge, and the dominoes which subsequently tumble, Boyett-Compo provides a fast-paced read, replete with passionate characters and intense action at every turn.

THE ROMANCE STUDIO

5 Hearts

IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND once again shows off Charlotte Boyett-Compo’s talents as we are plunged into the world of revenge and drugs. It never ceases to amaze me just how cruel man can be to one another and Charlotte has shown us just how far one man will go to have his revenge. I became caught up in this story from the very first page and I really didn’t want to stop reading it. The characters are all realistic and true to life, from the beautiful heroine never giving up on her love, to the flawed hero, noble to the end. If you enjoy a thrilling story that will hold you enthralled from the first page to the very last, you don’t want to miss THE WINDTORN TRILOGY.
