I have just finished a most inviting and involving Fantasy/Romance Novel by Charlotte Boyett-Compo entitled, WindKeeper. It is the first book in the Wind Legends Saga of which there are nine books. Wind Keeper or The Keeper of the Wind tells the tale of the coming of age of a young prince into his own dark world of evil sorcery. Sour and rather lacking in humor, he is only months away from an arranged wedding to a woman who has been described to him as something akin to a hideous frog. With little to look forward to, he luckily (or so we think), meets and falls in love with a mysterious woman of strength, beauty and magic. Upon their meeting, the reader is taken on a journey to defeat the powers of evil that claim his soul. Even with his love at his side, one wonders if in fact he will be spared the fate that awaits him.
What stands out about this book is the wonderfully strong characters, especially our leading lady, Liza, who turns out in many ways to be a most wonderful female heroine and role model. She is beautiful, intelligent and handy with a weapon. Hardly the shirking violet, our lady immediately saves our hero, Conar, not once but many times throughout the book. A story of magic, intrigue, romance and true love, WindKeeper will keep you interested page after wonderful page.
I can recommend this novel to those who enjoy stories of magic, fantasy, romance and adventure.

As with Boyett-Compo s other works, the futuristic BloodWind, for example, I am truly awed by her ability to describe so vividly and powerfully each of her characters depth of feeling, whether it be a love so pure and absolute, a hate so malicious, you can taste the bile, or a fear that will quake your very soul.
So intense was the suspense in this dark fantasy, it was like being caught under an incredible spell. I couldn t put the book down.
Charlotte Boyett-Compo is a wizardess of magical and marvelous tales. If you haven t had the chance to experience any of her works yet, The Windkeeper is an excellent place to start.

"I've been looking forward to getting my hands on the WindLegends saga, and after reading this first book THE WINDKEEPER, I wasn't disappointed. This is no ordinary fantasy romance, rather a dark fantasy in which the love of two characters is essential to the plot.
There is an evil presence in this book bent on torturing poor Conar, which he does at every available turn. The cast of characters is extensive, but each is interesting in his or her own way. Though I'm not sure why some characters introduced were necessary at this point, threads dealing with these characters were disappointingly left untied, that is the way of a series: leave 'em hanging so they'll read the next book. And, though I found the hero such a contradiction at times, screaming "Do you know who I am?" when people aren't bowing and scraping to him, yet surprised when his temper and power scare others, I found him a character I could care about, a character I look forward to reading again.
Ms. Boyett-Compo has a way of making words on a page come alive with sights, sounds, and emotions vivid, rich enough that this quite easily could be adapted into a film saga that I'd definitely pay to see. Well done, Charlee, keep 'em coming."

Boyett-Compo teases with just the right finesse. She balances the right amount of detail, while leaving some things to the edge of the reader's imagination. Full of good fun among friends, passionate scenes, fierce and foolish fighting and darker implications, Windkeeper is a wonderful long read with the promise of more to come in The Windlegends saga. I know I am eager to find out what happens in Serenia next!

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Fans of Charlotte Boyett-Compo will cheer the release of WINDKEEPER, originally available only in paperback under the title THE KEEPER OF THE WIND. Complete with previous pieces that had been edited out, WINDKEEPER is destined to become a best seller.
A rich and complex weave of adventure, romance, and fantasy, WINDKEEPER is an extraordinary tale with great promise of powerful sequels. As readers have come to expect, both humor and grace are well balanced in this tantalizing novel. Indeed, move over Robert Jordan, for you have competition. With the depth of characterization so easily penned by Boyett-Compo, these characters live long in the readers memory, demanding the story continue. This reviewer not only very highly recommends WINDKEEPER, but wishes the sequel were ready now!

The Romance Journal
Romance is definitely at the forefront here and, although I figured out Liza's secret early on, the ending was wonderful. Liza's and Conar's relationship is fast and intense, with his upcoming marriage the main obstacle to be overcome. Conar certainly has a lot of flaws and manages to hurt almost everyone, including Liza, but redeems himself well in the end. I never felt that I got to know Liza that well because of her secret background. The supporting characters are terrific, especially the innkeeper's wife with her unique way of keeping Conar under control during his convalescence there!
Although Conar and Liza's dilemma is resolved, I finished the book wanting to start the next one immediately. The malevolence of Kaileel Tohre, and the threat he and Galen pose to Conar and Liza, left me wanting to know what happens next.
WindKeeper is another terrific story from Charlotte Boyett-Compo, and a wonderful beginning to what promises to be an incredible saga!

5 Stars! I could feel the adventure!
I loved this book and once I picked it up, well - opened the file, did not put my Rocketbook down. Charlotte Boyett-Compo seems to have the gift of breathing air into her characters' lungs as well as giving them voice and painting 3D pictures on the mind's eye. If you like television such as Hercules and Xena and you read Windkeeper, you will see how much better a good book can be. Charlotte provides all of the elements for adventure that lives in the heart.

4 Stars: Windkeeper is a wonderfully crafted story...
As a reader, I found this to be a very exciting and well-written story. I was pleasantly surprised to find out how much I did like the book, as I do not normally read novels of dark fantasy. But I could not stop reading the book once I started. I was compelled to find out what happened to Liza and Conar. Do they get to be together? Does he have to marry the Princess? What happens? These are the questions I had to know before I could put the book down. This is a book that is fast paced. The only problem I could see as a reader was all the different names which are different and a little more confusing to grasp at first, but this in no way detracts from the story. This is one reader that knows she will read more books in the future by Charlotte Boyett-Compo!

Science Fiction and Fantasy World
Windkeeper is the story of a young man scarred, in more ways that one, who is salvaged by a ravishing heroine and an extraordinary impetuous love. I expected more out of the detestable villains and suspect I've been set up to see more from them in book two. The ending is predictable, but it's great fun getting there. The reading is easy. The pace is fast. Charlotte propels readers through a wide range of intense emotions from anguish to impassioned ecstasy. I was brought to tears by characters so real I mourned with them.
The ability to reveal a world through her characters is an indication of Charlotte's skill and talent. She has created a midlevel place where half the people have magic powers and the other half is illegitimate, interesting values. Serenia is a world where children are cherished, regardless of the circumstances of their conception, breech of a marriage contract is severely and brutally punished, but the 'double standard' is alive and well.
Charlotte Boyett-Compo quickly got my attention with exciting action from the start and held it through the book. Her characters are wonderfully fervid people you will love to adore or thrill at despising. Windkeeper offers a heroine who bails out the hero, lots of sizzling passion, bloody sword fights, nasty bad-guys and the promise of more to come.

While this is more romantic fantasy than horror, set in a medieval world where magic is very real, there is a strain of darkness which colors the storyline that will make it very appealing to horror fans as well as romance and fantasy readers. The Brotherhood is a bloody scary group of villains, and while Boyett-Compo doesn't go into detail in this novel, we know that Conor has suffered the torments of hell while under their tutelage. The first of a series of nine books, this one is a reversal of Taming of the Shrew, with Conor the one who needs to be taught to behave li th prince he is, rather than as a spoiled, arrogant, aristocrat. Yet beneath the banter and romance, we are always aware of the Brotherhood lurking in the darkness. A promising start to a series that bids fair to be fascinating and filled with enough nasty horrors to satisfy even the fans of Ramsay Campbell.

The Eternal Night
Windkeeper is a good fantasy romance. It is fun to read, especially the sections where Liza shows him exactly who is boss. OK, the ending is predictable but so what! Sometimes the best part isn't the final destination it is the route taken to get there and in the case of Windkeeper it is a wonderful journey. A gentle, feel-good book that will make you smile and leave you with a touch of the warm-fluffies!

This is Fantasy Romance, and for fans of that sub-genre The Windkeeper is going to be like mana from heaven. The characters are well drawn, the story is clearly told, and the plot is seamless. It takes a long time to get where it s going, but it always has a clear handle on its destination and never wanders around needlessly. This book is shear entertainment; well-crafted, focused, high quality entertainment.

No review can do this vastly intricate story justice. So much is going on, readers become totally immersed into the Windlegends world. The primary characters, Conar and Liza, are a gripping couple with an intense pleasure-pain love relationship. Readers will truly empathize with Conars agony when Liza leaves after a night of passion at the inn, or Lizas immense sadness of leaving him, never to return. Highly developed secondary characters, like Kaileel, Legion and Galen, add more flavor and depth to an already excellent story.

I had a wonderful time reading Conar and Lizas love story. But what is the
secret Liza is keeping from Conar? Why does Conar turn white as a ghost every
time he is near Kaileel Tohre? What deep dark secret does Kaileel hold over
Conar? And most of all, who will Conar marry, the love of his life Liza or
Princess Anya? Charlotte Boyett- Compo is a very intense writer. She has no
limit to her imagination or her ability to write a story that will keep you

The opening tale of the Windlegends Saga, WINDKEEPER is a terrific romantic
fantasy that stars a powerful cast who make Charlotte Boyett-Compos sword and
sorcery world seem authentic. The story line is action-packed from the moment
that Liza rescues Conar from thugs and never slows down until the final
altercation, which provides a fine finish to this tale and sets up the next book
(see WINDSEEKER). The lead duo is somewhat typical of the sub-genre, but no one
will care an iota as they go about their adventures with fans rooting for them
to succeed as a couple and against the Brotherhood turning WINDKEEPER into a

Fallen Angels Reviews: second look

I have to approve of how Boyett-Compo makes Conar react. Conar is not your typical fictional prince. He is a little pampered because of his station, and he isnt a pillar of the community. He has faults, and these faults make the story more interesting as you watch the two main characters (and several well-written secondary characters) circle around each other trying to find a happy middle. This story, while frustrating in points, more than makes up for it by being a good example of Boyett-Compos early writing.

I have read many romances in my time but this novel goes beyond your typical love story. The feelings that grow between Connor and Liza are real and believable. The chemistry between the star-crossed lovers is hot, Hot, HOT. Windkeeper is a wonderfully crafted story. Charlotte does an exceptional job of building a rich world and populating it with characters that jump off the page.
A word of warning to readers out there, this is not your typical romance. Charlotte does not throw any punches. Windkeeper has its share of tormented souls, dark secrets and pain. Kaileel Tohre makes a terrifying villain whose obsession with Connor will leave your skin crawling.
There are many obstacles to Connor and Liza’s happiness, and while they triumph by books end it is apparent that readers are going to be in for an emotional roller coaster as they read future books in the Wind Legends Saga.
