Kathy's Faves and Raves

This book is about good and evil, love and hate. It is a book that kept me coming back page after page, chapter after chapter to see what was going to happen next. I was literally drawn to this book. I was compelled to find out how the story was going to end.

Gabe James was living a lie. His wife, Annie would ask him about his past and he would just get angry and tell her to just let it go. Finally his wife went into the attic and found an old trunk. She found newspaper clippings about cops who were missing or who had been beaten up or killed in the line of duty. When she asked Gabe about these newspaper clippings, he again would not answer any of her questions. Then Annie made one phone call that would change the lives of her, Gabe and the whole town where they lived.

Gabe's father was Liam Tremayne, a much hated mob boss down in Florida. Liam hated Gabe and had hated him from the day he was born. He had abused Gabe mentally and physically and at one time had him kidnapped and put in a mental institution. Gabe escaped and had been running ever since. Annie's phone call alerted Liam as to where Gabe now was so he sent men after him to bring him back. Gabe was kidnapped and now it was up to Annie and the townspeople to find him and get him back.

This book is a perfect example of the goodness and the evil of people. For a while there, I thought the evil people would rule. Imagine my surprise and delight to find that good does triumph over evil after all.

This is Charlotte Boyett-Compo at her very best!

"....Heart Of The Wind kept me riveted to my seat as I entered Jamie's world and discovered to my horror and dismay what a really dysfunctional family could do to you-especially one with power. But I also discovered what true and loving friends would and could do for you when you are in trouble. Best selling author, Charlotte Boyett-Compo constantly amazes me with her ability to reach out and pull the reader into her stories-and for a time you are one with the characters living the life they are living feeling every emotion they are feeling. Suspense, horror, thrills, intrigue and love are all intertwined into this expertly woven tale. If you have read one of Ms. Boyett-Compo books then you already know you have to read them all because they are excellent reads. But if you haven't read one, then read Heart Of The Wind. I guarantee you will want to read more of this prolific author's books. I know I do."

Gabe and Annie have a nice life in Iowa good friends and a loving marriage. One day Annie finds an old locker in the attic. Inside, she finds the key to the life of her husband before their marriage and the key to open the terror and pain that Gabe left behind. Annie s discoveries set in motion a chain events that leads to the kidnapping of her husband, and the incredible rescue plan put together by Gabe and Annie s friends.

This is definitely an edge of your seat story one that once started, can t be put down. The characters are larger than life, but Boyett-Compo has created a frighteningly realistic plot. The psychological underpinnings really make this story exciting. The reader is amazed at the depth of evil that Boyett-Compo places in her characters. On the other hand, the good characters are as interesting and well developed as the bad guys.

It was a relief to find that the plot followed smoothly through some rather complex development to a gratifying conclusion. Boyett-Compo so develops the depth of the action and psychological effects, that the reader wonders if she can successfully conclude it without either a magical moment or leaving the reader wondering how she got from point A to point B. Amazingly, Boyett-Compo has a realistic and smooth conclusion leaving the reader as satisfied as he might be after a well made meal.

This is an exciting story and well worth the read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves action, suspense or psychological stories. I give it 5 stars.

5 Stars and Reviewer's Choice for May 2000

"Talk about a heart-pumping, can't-put-it-down book! This is the first "Wind" book I've read of Charlee Compo's but I tell you, if the rest of them are half as good as this one, I'm there! I'm buying! Suspense? God, yes. And such nastiness from a family! After what they do and have done to him . . . Believe me, when it comes down to the end, and Jamie has to take care of business, you can bet you'll be cheering for him all the way. And the townspeople, they prove just how much friendship is worth, and how far they're willing to go for it. Excellent story, Ms. Boyett-Compo. You get my Reviewer's Choice Award for this month. Look out authors, it's going to be tough to beat this one."

"Intriguing, intense and action packed are the first words that come to mind when describing this book. I enjoyed this book very much. I found myself reading faster and faster just to find out what would happen next. The loyalty of James' friends and the continuing love of his wife after all that had happened was touching. I felt the ending fit the crimes. This book is another credit to Charlotte Boyett-Compo's list of excellent books."

4 Stars: Highest Rating=Oustanding Novel, Engrossing, A Classic

Handsome, friendly Gabe James and his pretty schoolteacher wife, Annie, fit right in with the good folks of Somewhere, Iowa. Then Gabe's past, one he fled in terror, comes to reclaim him, destroying his dreams of happiness and shattering his very sanity. Trapped and helpless in the hands of vicious enemies, he is unaware his wife and their loyal friends plan to find and rescue him.

Yet he knows the people he loves have exposed themselves to death and worse at the hands of those who kidnapped him, and he runs away from the safety they have provided for him to settle the past once and for all.

With "In the Heart of the Wind," Charlotte Boyett-Compo has written a telling and suspenseful novel of hatred, vengeance and redemption with a painfully human protagonist whom she places in a crucible of horrors to see if he has the strength and courage to survive. He does, but only after he has been refined down to his barest metal. Gabe thought he could escape his history by simply running away from it, only to learn that dark secrets have an unfortunate penchant for finding their way to light.

Boyett-Compo has an unerring eye for the nuances of small-town life and the true nature of those who call the American Heartland home. Added to this is a sharp ear for dialogue that gives special dimension to her characters, granting each a special voice that sets him or her apart.

She paints a portrait of people for whom friendship demands personal commitment and even sacrifice, and contrasts them with those for whose only loyalty is to themselves. From the very first page, she grabs readers by the throat and immerses them in the lives -- and deaths -- of people who are as familiar as their neighbors or as alien as the shadowy lurkers in the world's underbelly.

This is a story full of fierce dedication, unrelenting terror and unremitting evil. It is also a story of the true meaning of friendship. It is not a book for those with an aversion to life's harsher realities -- Boyett-Compo is not afraid to confront the truth and doesn't avoid harsh justice.

Her hero is a flawed human being like you and I, not an impossibly righteous caricature. "In the Heart of the Wind" is a book that will shock you and shake you and that you will be reluctant to set aside until the last page has turned.

In a word, SPELLBINDING! But, I need to say much more than that about this story. This author captured my full attention from the first paragraph, and held it until the very last word. It was well written, and full of twists and turns, and the best part was, I could not guess what was coming next! This story held a multitude of surprises for me. The events were believable, and I felt like I was there with the characters

A griping tale of power and money verses real love and real friendships. You will find that some of the characters you do not like at first but will end up liking, and maybe vice versa. I highly recommend this one! It is a thrilling story, with strong willed characters, and moving dialogue. Buy it, you will not be disappointed.

WordWeaving: Second Look

This psychological thriller is one of the best I've ever read. The plot is well planned, the action fast & furious and the pure adrenaline emotions the reader experiences are extreme. The pure evil demonstrated by Gabe's family in contrast to the loyalty and love his neighbors show is a contrast that reflects the human range of emotions. The reader is compulsively drawn to finish this story, to the extent of ignoring life around you. I found myself snarling at interruptions and spending a long afternoon in the recliner, reading as fast as I could.

IN THE HEART OF THE WIND will cause your heart to be faster, it will confound you with the evilness of some of the characters yet, at the end, you will be rewarded with a story that you will never forget and that will bring a tear to your eyes. I highly recommend this story. It just doesn't get any better than this.

Mystery & Suspense 'Zine

Charlotte Boyett-Compo created a tale of excitement and deception in the suspense-filled novel, "In the Heart of the Wind."

Gabe James has run from his past for many years, afraid someone will discover who he really is. His wife, Patricia Anne trying to uncover his hidden past inadvertently warns his enemies just where he has been hiding all these years. Gabe is kidnapped and tortured, suspended in his worst nightmares. The town must band together and rescue Gabe before it is too late.

Ms. Boyett-Compo's skill in developing characters shows true talent. She weaves her characters in an exciting cat-and-mouse chase with her remarkable descriptive voice. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great suspense novel!

Murder List

There is so much going on in this book that every time you turn a page you're stunned again, and again, by new secrets that pop up, and new acts of torture that Gabe goes through. I could not put this book down.

Ms. Compo has written the best book I've read in a long time. I have to say, that I don't even have the words to convey how truly wonderful this book is. I can honestly tell you that I cried twice while reading it. My overview of the book hasn't even touched five percent of what you'll read and experience. My biggest question is why isn't this book stocked on the shelves at the bookstores?

In the Heart of the Wind is one of the most excellent books I've read in a long time. The title leads you to believe it's a Romance. It's not. Far from it. It's the story of hate, greed and the true terror, and the abuse a family has inflicted on one of their own, because they don't feel he's as strong and good as they are. If I still gave out ratings on books, I'd have to say, In the Heart of the Wind, would blow a 5 Star rating out of the water!

A Romance Review

4 Roses

This is a well-written suspenseful story. Charlotte Boyett-Compo brings the reader into the seedy world of organised crime; nevertheless, as the story progresses, Ms. Boyett-Compo always remembers to keep the focus firmly on Gabe. The author shifts between the two areas of the little town where Gabe had settled with Annie and the dubious world of crime that he came from. She does this with a tight plot that is seamless. There are some really good characters, like the town's elderly citizen Edna Mae. Rich and outspoken, she has a real soft spot for Gabe and her character adds a humorous touch to the otherwise somber story.

The story is by no means a light hearted one. At times it is frightening what one human being can do to another and parts of this story are really harsh. There is a deep hatred directed at Gabe and it made me angry and also made me very much want to see the bad guys get what they deserved before the end of the book. Ms Boyett-Compo handles it well and keeps the story together well by the strength of her characterisation.

5 Hearts

IN THE HEART OF THE WIND is a fantastic story. Charlotte Boyett-Compo has once again shown us her masterful talent as we become enthralled with this story of both light and dark. We become caught up in the story of Gabe as loving husband with a secret past. We watch his transformation into the creature his family turns him into. We also have the light side in this suspenseful tale as watch the members of the Iowa town rally and hatch a plot to regain Gabe. I have to admit, my favorite character in this tale is Edna Mae, the feisty older woman with money and sense. This one will keep you turning the pages and I highly recommend it.

This story really socked a punch. I couldn't read it fast enough to find out what would happen next. What James' friends and wife do for him just shows that that kind of support can conquer evil like his family with hands down. Each new story that Charlotte Boyett-Compo writes just gets better and better. I look forward to seeing what she has in store next for her readers.
