Eternal Nights Reviews

WindFall tells of the trials, friendships, camaraderie and sacrifice of Gillian Cree, Kaelen Hesar and the friends they drew to them. Of their love for each other and their journey to fulfill the path destiny has laid out for them. They discover that all may not be as it appears on the surface but by learning to trust one another again they may be able to fit the pieces of the puzzle together and fulfill their destinies.

There is high adventure, passionate love, extreme personal risks, magical assistance, the discovery of true mates, yes discoveries for multiple couples and the background for the epic tale to come in the WindLegends series. Even if you have already read the WindLegend series, this book will enchant you. If you are just getting started in the series, then this is only a taste of the plot twists and turns still to come. Enjoy and be prepared to be drawn into a truly awesome series.

The story starts as Gillian Cree and her brother Nick suddenly find themselves in the middle of a snowstorm and by accident end up meeting prince Kaelan Hesar, Gillians only true love that abandoned her years ago. Now she is fleeing from being married to another man while Kaelan is living alone, exiled and left to die by the people in the nearby village.

Now Charlotte Boyett-Compo tells the story by shifting back and forth between present and past to tell the "real" story of both Gillian and Kaelan. At the same time they both discover the mischief they have been the victim of.

From all of this you might say that this is a romantic love story. You would of course be quite right, it is a love story, but although it starts out this way the thing is it's also quite a bit more than that. The world expands just as the story evolves, new characters are introduced, the plot gets more complicated and the use of magic makes its appearance as it would in any good fantasy novel. Something I especially like about this story is that although the magic is there, it's not the driving force. In that sense it's quite like George R.R. Martin's A song of Ice and Fire series

This is definitively a book I would recommend, for me this has proven that eBooks are here to stay, and that books published electronically can be just as good as those you find in your local bookstore, if not even better

WINDFALL is a very good love story, but it is also about revenge, deceit, betrayal, and what power does in the hands of the wrong person. It tells the story of how two people are caught up in events they could not avoid.

The characters and the events in WINDFALL are so well put together by Ms. Boyett-Compo that the reader never has a dull moment. It is one of the best e-Books that I have read.

Raven's Reviews

Boyett-Compo just keeps getting better. In WindFall, a prequel to the main series begun with The Keeper of the Wind, Compo introduces us to some of the characters who will be legends later. That she does so with skill and humor goes without saying. The world she created comes across like those of David Eddings or Robert Jordan, but Compo's focus is on the people more than their destinies.

Prince Kaelan Hesar, younger brother of the current Jarl, wanted nothing in the world more than to marry Gillian Cree, youngest daughter of the Chalean ambassador to his country. But his brother Duncan has other plans that include marrying Kaelan off to a wealthy commoner against his will and marrying Gilly to Duncan's Chief Vizier, a perverse man. The love story then blends into a wider tale of corrupted power in several kingdoms and the cruelty of the Brotherhood of the Domination. The reunion of Kaelan and Gilly is a triumph of trust, justice, and the healing power of love. Though the latter half of the book obviously exists to introduce us to a large cast of characters we will hear about again later, those characters are delightfully diverse and three-dimensional enough to hold the tale through plot twists and time skips. The author's skill in portraying men's interactions with each other, unusual in a romance writer, helps make this one of the most believable romantic epics.

SharpWriter Reviews

Soulmates from the moment of their first meeting, Gillian Cree and Prince Kaelan Hesar had a love most could only possess in dreams. But fate and those that would have them marry others conspired together and tore them apart forever. Or so they thought.

A wonderful story of love and hope, WindFall is a story for all times and seasons. Beautifully written with lush landscapes, strong romantic heroes (male and female), you’ll lose yourself to the point that you imagine you’re there yourself, walking among the other characters…and find yourself more than a little sad when you realize you’re not. Another great work by Charlotte Boyett-Compo!

Romance and Beyond Magazine

Charlee Compo has some real talent. Her writing (and this book especially) has many qualities that I have seen in the books of those authors who brought me (and most every other Romance enthusiast) to my love of this genre. My first instinct when beginning to read this book was that it was simply another of those historical romances masquerading as a fantasy. I must admit that I was ready to be somewhat disappointed. What I found instead was a book which enthralled and captured me so thoroughly that I can’t wait for the next one. Charm, wit, romance, humor, adventure…it’s all here and waiting for a lover of truly good tales.

Word Weaving

Windfall is a must read for anyone interested in losing themselves in another world. The central characters, Nick and Gilly, are so well developed that they become a part of you, as you become a part of them. Woven like a fine tapestry, the complex subplots draw the reader in, weaving a web of magic and imagination.

Kings, Tribunals, fights, and pirates weave their way into this incredible tale, promising sequels and fascination for the reader. The intricately woven yet immensely believable tale includes a touch of the fantastic, with witches and the paranormal.

I could not put this book down for two main reasons. One, I wanted to see what would happen to me next, and two, the story totally pulled me into a completely new world. Charlotte Boyett-Compo creates such a world in the pages of her book that I didn't want to leave. Secondly, not only can this book be read as part of a series, but it also a stand-alone work of art. I am anxious to read the remaining books in Windfall series. This book is extraordinary, and I strongly recommend it to any fantasy reader.

Scribe's World

5 Stars

Feisty Gillian Cree refuses to wed a lecherous, sadistic nobleman, despite her father's honor, her Jarl's decree, and the machinations of her stepmother. She escapes, only to find herself and her brother at the desolate home of her one true love, Prince Kaelan. Kaelan, disowned and wed to the highest bidder at his brother's decree, has been living in isolation and abandonment since his wife's death five years earlier. More dead than alive, Kaelan reveals how his brother forced his marriage and sanctioned his near-death sentence. Reunited and wed by a renegade priest, Gillian and Kaelan hope for a life together. Unfortunately, their troubles are just beginning.

While Windfall isn't set on Earth as we know it, it is much more of a romance than a fantasy. It delves into the ugly side of human greed and isolation while affirming that love is an important part - if not the most important part - of anyone's life, and that yes, it can conquer all.

".....An exciting story that has many sub-plots. There is NO doubt in my mind that it will hold onto its readers' attentions. Seldom do you find a story where the Hero has been crippled. This makes the story seem all the more real! (Psst...just wait until you meet D'Lyn and Brownie! I seal my lips about them!)

***** Excellent read

Absolutely Fantastic!! If you haven’t read this book yet, I strongly recommend you grab it and do so. Be careful though, once you open it and start reading, you won’t be able to put it back down until you’ve finished. Ms. Boyett-Compo has packed this book so full that it overflows. There is fantasy, romance, danger, adventure, and mystery, this book has it all.

…..This book is completely spellbinding, it grabs you from the first sentence and even after you’ve turned that final page, you still reach for another page. I am definitely hooked and can hardly wait to read WindChance to find out more.

Fantasy, Folklore, and Fairy Tales

Boyett-Compo is setting the electronic publishing world on top when it comes to books. Her stories exceed expectations and rival print authors….. (she) will take us into the New Millennium on the wings of her stories. We will soar higher and higher with her WindLegend Saga series.

Political intrique, personal power wars, and loveless marriages unfold as friends the three never knew they had come to their aid. This is truly a dark paranormal romance. Once again Boyett-Compo keeps the reader guessing. It is a tale of love and political intrique at its best. Charlotte Boyett-Compo does it again. When she ends the story she sets us up for the next one. WindChance promises to be a great read. Look for my review in future issues and ride the Wind into the New Millennium with Charlotte and me.

Blue Ribbon

Young Gillian Cree falls in love with Kaelan Hesar (and so did I), but their lives are cruelly torn apart when Kaelan’s brother, King Duncan, decides the match isn’t profitable. Kaelan is exiled and married off to the highest bidder. Many years later, Gillian and her brother Nick, rescue the Prince from certain death, and so begins an incredible tale of pirates, sorcerers and handsome princes. Charlee’s book had everything I could want from a fantasy adventure, and the enthralling story kept me turning the pages. Highly amusing in places, touching in others, you follow the tragic and ill-fated Kaelan on his journey back to respectability and love. The characters were strong, the bad got their come uppance, and the good were rewarded. There is sex and violence in this book, but it was justified in my opinion.

Kathy's Faves and Raves at Romance and Friends

This is the first e-published book that I've read by Charlotte Boyett-Compo. It is published as a dark fantasy but there are several romances in this book.

Gillian Cree has been bethrothed to a man whom she believes is 'scum of the earth'. She's heard that he is abusive and most especially likes young girls. Nicholas, her brother, refuses to let her marry Rolf de Viennes so they run away. Little do they know they are running right to Holy Dale where Kaelan Hesar lives. Gillian has loved Kaelan since she was 13 years old.

When Nick and Gilly find Kaelan burning up with fever and nearly dead from pneumonia, they nurse him back to health but they know it's only a matter of time before Rolf finds Gilly and demands that she marry him. They do everything they can to get Kaelan well so they can find a way to escape. Little do they know who else is looking for Kaelan and who is out to kill him. Will they be able to escape in time?

This book had me on the edge of my seat. I kept telling myself that I would read just one more chapter. The next thing I knew I'd finished the book. I thoroughly enjoyed Gilly and Kaelan's story and look forward to reading more of Charlee's books.

Crescent Blues

3 Crescents

The first book in a trilogy that acts as a prequel to the nine-volume WindLegend Saga, WindFall gives new meaning to sword and sorcery fantasy -- so much so that waiting for the next offering creates a growing hunger for more of this author's work. Boyett-Compo grabs the unwary reader by the imagination and pulls him or her deeper and deeper into a world of magic, love and treachery that never ceases to amaze, entertain and bemuse.

Parchment Symbols

In WindFall, Charlotte Boyett-compo creates more unforgettable characters in Kaelan and Gillian, lovers separated by manipulative enemies. Interweaving stories of past and present, a fantasy setting which is both familiar and brand new, and characters whose love and suffering are almost tangible, WindFall is a terrific read.

I had the thrill, and I do mean thrill of reading yet another of Ms. Charlotte Boyett-Compo's great books. This time it was WindFall.

A sexy and mysterious novel of undying love, devotion and eternity it is labeled a "Dark Fantasy Sword & Sorcery Romance" and it delivers!! If you like reading stories filled with high fantasy, adventure and danger, then this is your pick. The characters, as usual with Ms. Boyett-Compo, are multi-dimensional and the story rich with intrigue. I could not put it down! If you would like to read and purchase this wonderful book you can find out more about it at the WindLegends Website http://www.geocities.com/windlegends/. Or go directly to Amazon.com.

If I were to give out a star rating on this novel it would have to be 4 3/4 stars. Thank you Ms. Boyett-Compo for another excellent novel!! I look forward to your next!

Nicholas Cree and his younger sister, Gillian, are fleeing from the court in Virago to avoid Gillian's forced marriage to Rolf de Viennes--a man so vicious and cruel not even a dog should be forced to wed him. Their mounts are gone, scared away by wolves, they have no food and have been caught out in the open during a blizzard. Close to freezing, they are also lost with no idea in which direction to turn. And then Gillian hears a feeble cry for help. Little do either of them know that by answering that pitiful call their lives will take a path neither they--nor the person whose cry they answer--could have suspected.

You see, the person in distress is Prince Kaelan Hesar, the Virago King's brother. The brother who was--according to court gossip--living in a faraway land. He is also Gillian's True Love.

From their chance meeting a love both of them had thought lost is rekindled. But the circumstances surrounding Prince Kaelan's departure from court, and Gillian's flight from a terrible fate in the hands of Rolf de Viennes are not so easily set aside. The King's trackers arrive and Gillian must flee, leaving Kaelan behind.

If you like originality in a world-setting, a romance with compelling characters and a well woven plot, this is the book for you!

The Romance Journal

"...once I was hooked, this was a book that I did not want to put down! There is so much drama that I went from laughter to tissues before I was finished. Gilly and Kaelen's past is told in flashbacks, but the transition from past to present is not disruptive to the storyline at all.

I found this part of Kaelen and Gilly's story spellbinding, but it's definitely not a typical romance. Some readers might find it a bit dark and violent; in fact it's rated PG-13. This is the first book in the WindTales trilogy, prequels to the author's earlier book "The Keeper of the Wind". There will be nine books comprising the complete WindLegends Saga.

A compelling story, WindFall left me anticipating an incredible journey through the WindLegends world!

and Romancing The Web

This is a beautifully told story, comparable to Romeo and Juliet with a much better ending. However, not without many prices to pay in the bargain. From the moment you open the book, it is an adventure. The characters nearly jump off the page they are so real. You will root for a prince that defies his own death. Every character in this book is vibrantly alive and keeps you turning the pages to hear more. It keeps you enthralled to the very end to see how all their misadventures lead to true love and happiness. You will live this story to the end and cherish it as a classic. One wonderful book, full of every element that makes reading a pleasure. Read this one for a ride you won't soon forget my friends, an unforgettable book!

The Romance Reader's Connection

T hough billed as a fantasy, there is very little magic, and might be considered more an alternate historical, such as Glenna McReynolds writes. Unlike most epic fantasies, there is no quest against a great evil, just the quest to keep two young lovers together despite the odds against them. Christianity is briefly alluded to, which is why I think Windfall is set on an alternate Earth. Also, hints of a coming Dark One offer the potential that the upcoming novels in the series might be more closely aligned with the traditional fantasy genre. It definitely left me wanting more.

For any readers not familiar with Ms. Boyett-Compo’s WindLegends Saga, WindFall is a wonderful place to start. Dark fantasy in a detailed setting, WindFall introduces names which will pop up again in later books – Cree, Sorn, and others. For readers who have already read some of the other WindLegends books, WindFall provides further insights into the families and societies of Ms. Boyett-Compo’s world.

Fast-paced from start to finish, WindFall will take the reader to another world, and into the lives of very memorable characters. With swordfights, warlocks, villains and true love – truly an epic adventure – it’s a difficult book to put down, and I’m happy to recommend it!

This is the second book of Charlotte Boyett-Compo that I have read, and I'm now on a mission to track down all her other books. I fell in love with Kaelan and Gillian and found myself anxiously pushing the down button to find out what happens next. Her characters are rich and vivid and the action is past and doesn't slow down from page one. Dark Fantasy and Sci-fi Romance fans will love this book. Charlotte Boyett-Compo doesn't disappoint.
